How Deck Builders Tempe Works
Deck Builders Tempe designs, builds, repairs and refinishes decks in Tempe and across the East Valley: composite and wood decks, covered decks and pergolas, railings and stairs, and staining and sealing for wood that has dried out in the sun.
Every project starts at your house. We measure the space, check how the yard drains, note where the sun hits in the afternoon, and look at what the deck will attach to or sit beside: the house wall, a slab patio, a pool deck or a block wall. In Tempe, those details decide most of the design. A deck that faces west with no shade can be too hot to walk on barefoot for much of the year, so shade and board color are part of the first conversation, not an afterthought.
We also sort out the paperwork early. The City of Tempe's patio cover handout says a building permit is required before putting up a building addition, temporary or permanent, and asks for a site plan, foundation plan and framing details. Decks can need a permit too, depending on their height, size and whether they attach to the house, so we confirm that with the city for your design. If you live in a community with an HOA, the architectural committee usually wants drawings and material samples before work starts. We prepare the drawings and the material list so you can submit them, and we schedule around the approvals.
After the visit you get a written quote that lists the framing, decking, railing, stairs, cover and finish separately, with the price for each. Nothing starts until you approve it, and any change is agreed in writing first.
How we work
- Framing is laid out for the boards you choose, with the joist spacing and gapping the manufacturer calls for.
- Afternoon sun and shade are planned before the board color is picked.
- Footings, ledger connections and flashing are shown on the drawings before they are built.
- Monsoon wind is considered in every cover, pergola and railing post connection.
- Work in summer is scheduled for the cooler hours of the day.
- You pay only for work you approved in writing.
