Decks That Fit the Hills and the People Who Live Here

Deck Builders in Fountain Hills often get asked for two things at once: a deck that makes the most of a mountain or fountain view, and stairs and railings that will be comfortable to use for many years. That makes sense in a town where the 2020 census put the median age at 60.8 and about 40% of residents are 65 or older. We design with both in mind.

A planned town on volcanic hills

Fountain Hills was developed by C. V. Wood, president of McCulloch Oil, and the namesake fountain was built in 1970. The town incorporated in 1989. It sits on the east side of the south end of the McDowell Mountains, with elevation rising to about 3,190 feet on the western border, and it borders the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation to the east. That terrain gives many homes downhill views, along with sloped backyards that call for elevated decks, taller posts and multiple stair runs.

Stairs and railings that age well

If you plan to stay in your home a long time, a deck should be easy to get onto and off of. We often recommend:

  • Wider treads and shallower risers than the minimum, with a landing on longer runs
  • Graspable handrails on both sides of stairs where space allows
  • Low-threshold transitions from the house to the deck surface
  • Slip-resistant, light-colored decking that does not get scalding in summer
  • Step and path lights aimed down so edges are visible at night

Lighting that respects the Dark Sky designation

In January 2018, the International Dark Sky Association named Fountain Hills an International Dark Sky Community, one of only two near a large metropolitan area. For deck projects, that is a good reason to choose fully shielded, downward-facing fixtures with warm color temperatures, mounted low on posts and stair stringers. You get safe footing and a lit dining area without spilling glare into the sky or onto a neighbor's lot.

Washes, drainage and footings

Several washes run through town, including the Ashbrook, Balboa, Legend and Colony washes, and they can flood during heavy rain. Before we set footings, we look at where water moves across your lot during a monsoon storm and keep posts out of drainage paths. Monsoon season officially runs June 15 to September 30 in the Phoenix area, and the same storms bring gusts that test any shade cover on an exposed ridge, so connections and bracing matter.

Composite or wood at this elevation

The town is higher than Phoenix, but summer sun is still intense. Composite and capped boards keep their color and do not need yearly sealing, which many Fountain Hills owners appreciate. If you love the look of wood, we build with it and set up a realistic staining schedule. For existing decks, a cleaning and resealing can buy several more years if the frame is sound.

Fountain Hills Questions

Can you make my existing deck stairs easier to climb?

Usually. We can rebuild a stair run with shallower risers and deeper treads, add a landing, and install handrails on both sides. If space is tight, we will show you the trade-offs before building.

What kind of deck lighting fits the Dark Sky designation?

Shielded fixtures that point down, warm color temperatures and lights mounted low on steps and posts. They light the walking surface without sending glare upward or toward neighbors.

My yard drops off toward a wash. Can I still build a deck there?

Often yes, but we keep footings out of the water's path and look at how runoff moves during storms. In some cases a deck set back from the wash with a view toward it is the better option.
